Boston University
Rooftop Air Handling Unit Replacement, 590 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston

The replacement of the Rooftop Air Handling Unit at 590 Commonwealth Avenue is part of a two phase project. The first being the replacement of the existing rooftop HVAC unit with a new "Mega-Unit" and the second, the replacement of all interior air delivery devices.

Replacement of the existing rooftop HVAC unit requires the installation of a parallel new unit. The existing unit will then be shutdown and removed. The new Mega-Unit will be connected to the existing building distribution ductwork followed by a start-up and commissioning phase.

Additional structural steel columns will need to be installed in the building to support the 400-ton weight of the new unit. To avoid disruption to the occupied spaces, work schedules will be coordinated with occupants.

A newly constructed structural steel platform on the roof will receive the Mega-Unit which will be hoisted in thirty three sections and assembled. The existing building’s MEP / FP systems will then be connected to the new unit.
