BOSTON,
Mass. - Richard White Sons, acting as
construction manager on behalf of the private
Trust for City Hall Plaza, completed construction
of the Community Arcade at City Hall Plaza in
January of 2001. The arcade is situated at the
uppermost elevation of City Hall Plaza and extends
300 feet from the JFK Federal Building to the MBTA
station at its southern terminus. Future plans
call for renovations of the MBTA station in the
fall under a publicly bid construction contract.
The
arcade is composed of thirteen 60-foot stainless
steel masts, which support a galvanized steel
framework and hardwood slat canopy. The structure
serves as a distinguishing gateway from Cambridge
Street to the western edge of City Hall
Plaza. |

The area
will be used for a seasonal farmer's market
in
daylight hours and for entertainment and displays
on evenings and weekends. A computerized light
display, controlled from a vault under the plaza,
features 12 foot glass tubes that are programmed
to chime (change colors) hourly for a fanciful
night time light show. Master plans for the arcade
and MBTA renovations were furnished by Chan
Krieger & Associates, architect for the
arcade.
In
addition to CM services, Richard White Sons' Site
Development and Utility Division self-performed
all demolition, excavation and concrete foundation
and flatwork. Caisson footings were excavated to a
depth of 30 feet for 11 of the masts, while the
two remaining masts share a single light weight
concrete mat footing that bridges the shallow MBTA
Green line tunnel, which is only 10 feet below the
surface.
