June 2007 - This new facility will be headquarters for the Physics Department and Department of Materials Science Engineering for Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Preconstruction activities encompassing fifteen months moved seamlessly into the construction phase which is nearing completion.

The project consists of a new four story, 48,000 SF "infill" building constructed in an existing courtyard bound on four sides by existing buildings, with bridge connections to three of the Buildings. The surrounding buildings numbers Four, Six and Eight will have major renovations consisting of 200,000 SF of work. 

The new space will include classrooms, faculty office spaces and laboratories. Mechanical and electrical systems will be housed in the new building, providing infrastructure to upgrade the mechanical and electrical systems in the adjoining buildings.
