New Bedford Whaling
Museum Wins Award
NEW
BEDFORD, Mass. -- Established in 1903, the New
Bedford Whaling Museum brings to life the rich
history of American whaling in the age of sail and
New Bedford's role as the premier whaling port of
the 19th century.
The
museum, cornerstone of the New Bedford Whaling
National Historical Park, has a collection of
125,000 objects, including the world's largest
ship model, displays of fine and decorative arts,
and collections of cultural artifacts, rare
antiquities, scrimshaw, and logbooks. It is one of
only three locations in the United States where
the public can view a complete blue whale
skeleton. This world-renowned institution is also
one of only 10% of museums nationwide, to be
accredited by the American Association of Museums.
As it
prepares for its second century of service to an
increasing number of visitors-from school children
and scholars to people from the region and
throughout the world-the Museum is undergoing a
major expansion and renovation effort, thanks to
an $11 million capital campaign now nearing
completion.
In March
of 2000, the Museum was awarded a prestigious
$500,000 challenge grant by the Kresge
Foundation-the largest foundation gift ever
received by the Museum. The grant is conditional
upon the completion of the capital campaign by no
later than May 1, 2001. Approximately $500,000 is
still needed to reach this goal. The funds will be
used for new long-term exhibits, upgrading the
education classroom as a community resource, and
completing an entrance plaza that will make the
Museum fully-accessible. With your help, the
Museum can meet this challenge.
