The Trust for City Hall Plaza, New Pedestrian Arcade
Boston, MA
A four-year study and public approvals process resulted in a striking Pedestrian Arcade which enlivens the broad open edge of City Hall Plaza with a pavilion combining concrete, wood, and steel. This outdoor arcade serves as a gateway to City Hall Plaza and provides an attractive and inviting place for people to gather with a series of bench lined platforms beneath suspended wood trellises.
The project features 13 60-foot stainless steel columns, requiring 20-foot deep caisson foundations to secure the structures above. The MBTA Blue Line runs below the site, necessitating spread footing foundations which span the underground tunnel. Richard White Sons self-performed a challenging underground excavation that required clearing gas, electric, and telephone lines.
The project required coordination among the various public agencies that have responsibilities around the 8.5-acre plaza; the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA), the Mayor’s office, the General Services Administration, the MBTA, and other city departments.
