1200 Yards in One Day at Suffolk University

(Boston, MA) Richard White Sons, Inc. poured 1200 yards of concrete in eight hours at Suffolk University on Saturday, June 29th to complete the mat footing for Suffolk University’s New 19-story, 128,000 square foot, 368-bed residence hall.

Coordinating the shutdown of Somerset Street and the renting of a parking lot at One Ashburton Place, 25 trucks began pouring concrete at an average rate of 200 yards per hour.  The Boston Sand  & Gravel trucks each made four trips to the site while two concrete pump trucks placed the mix.  With temperatures in Boston ranging from 85°-90°F, the challenge for Richard White Sons’ team became keeping the concrete temperature at 80°F.  With four concrete quality control inspectors monitoring at the precise slump and temperature, concrete was continuously poured throughout the day.

The Richard White Sons project team included, Peter Banta, John Hickey, Tom Dumont, Dave Landry, Craig White, John Bacchiocchi and Steve Bard.  With Boston tourism at its peak around the State House and Beacon Hill, four Boston police officers were stationed at the site to ensure safety for pedestrians and onlookers.
